U6 - Insect (UNIT 4) Project Checklist

Laurent Seroussi - from "Insectes" series

Project checklist, this work needs completion by Friday 15th February:
  • Insect mind map – 2 pages, rich with ideas, words, phrases associated with insects. Think literally and outside the box.
  • Visual mood-boarding 2-4 pages, rich collaged pages of imagery and snippets of information, dictionary definitions etc. on the insect theme. Use https://www.pinterest.co.uk/
  • Range of photos, contact sheet plus best shots printed larger. 20+ photos, best 4-6 printed at A5.
  • At least 2 sustained drawings in the sketchbook (pencil tonal and another media e.g. biro) look hard and record as much detail as you can + include photocopy inverts of these.
  • Large scale expressive drawings – ink and acrylic, charcoal mid-tone, photograph and print out for inclusion in the sketchbook.
  • Photograms done with Ms. Mason.
  • Monoprint/s.
  • A Gold Card print – plate and prints mounted in your books.
  • 4 pages supporting research into an illustrator and a fine artist who explore different approaches to drawing.
Choose one illustrator from:
  • Ralph Steadman, Dave McKean, Tim Burton.
And one Fine Artist from:
  • Egon Schiele, Alison Lambert, William Kentridge.
As usual with research this should be thoughtfully presented, include several good quality images of the Artist's drawings along with brief biographical detail and some in depth personal analysis and justified opinions that relate to specific works. Describe what you see and refer to the formal qualities such as use of line, tone, composition, mark-making, media, scale etc.
  • At least 2 well resolved insect collages and further variants from this created with the photocopier and PhotoShop.
  • Research into the digital "Insectes" series of Artworks by Laurent Seroussi to support your collage and digital work - 2 pages, brief bio, analysis of specific images, good reproductions ...you know the drill! https://mymodernmet.com/laurent-seroussi-women-insects/
  • Research into the plane based figurative sculptures of Naum Gabo (2 pages with analysis of specific works - more detail at the end of this post).
  • 3D Card sculptural piece based on insect forms and inspired by Gabo's work.
  • Photography from 3D Card insect sculptures.
  • Panel pin and jewellery wire on board 3D illustrations.
  • Project Evaluation (guidance will be issued).
NAUM GABO RESEARCH:
To complement the 3D work we are completing in Class for your Materials, Techniques and Processes Unit 4 you need to research the slotted plane sculptures of Naum Gabo based on the human figure (there are many other aspects to Gabo's work, but your focus in this research should be on these specific pieces, some examples are illustrated below).
As usual with research this should be thoughtfully presented over at least 2 sketchbook pages, include several images of the sculptor's work along with brief biographical detail and more importantly some personal analysis and justified opinions that relate to specific works. Talk about planes, negative space and the materials and techniques that Gabo is employing.
The work we will be completing in class will effectively form the visual response.
This research needs to be completed for submission with the rest of your project on Friday 15th February 2019.
