L6 - Containment Unit 1 Mock Update.

Sustained Observational drawing

You now have the "Containment" brief, we will be following this as a mock for your Unit 1 (Visual Recording and Communication) through until Monday 18th March, when we can commence on your actual Exam Unit.
Through this term we will, alongside the containment project, also do some work to prepare you for your Unit 2 (Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design) Exam after Easter.
Through these preparatory projects we can teach and advise you, but be aware when you do the actual papers you will be working independently - by then you will have the skills to do this, honest!

Containment overview:
PART 1 (3 and a half weeks): Generate a body of source imagery based on the theme and explore media. We will experiment with drawing, printmaking, photography, collage and digital techniques. Produce supporting research work.
PART 2 (3 and a half weeks) Produce a specialist body of work that extends the theme and the imagery developed in PART 1. This can be in an Art and Design area of your choosing. It needs to be a coherent body of work with idea generation, thorough development, a well realised outcome and appropriate supporting research.

PART 1 Initial Tasks:
You should be aiming to complete this work by Monday 28th January.

  • A set of photos based on wrapped objects (or people), include contact sheet thumbnails of all your shots and print out 5 or 6 of the best ones at A5 or A4.
  • A sustained sketchbook drawing based on one of these photos in pencil or biro - this should be at least A4 in scale and represent at least 3 hours work.
  • An A1 chalk and charcoal drawing based on your photos, record this photographically for inclusion in the sketchbook.
  • At least 2 pages of visual moodboarding on containment - mostly imagery (use Pinterest), but you could also include information like dictionary definitions of the theme word.
  • A gold card plate cut and printed, mount this work thoughtfully in your books.
  • 2 pages of research into wrapped object works by Christo - find photos of actual works and plan drawings. Present dynamically and follow the usual drill for research: brief biographical detail, justified personal opinion on specific works with analysis that refers to the formal elements - e.g. media, technique, scale and the Artist's intentions.
