Vocational Scenario or context
|
A
Design studio has requested that you research into the idea of ‘Insects’ and
produce a selection of 2D and 3D art work to be used as inspiration for
future Art and Design work at the studio. Produce a body of work within a
sketchbook that responds to both the anatomical shape and the expressive ideas
of insects. You are asked to
respond using observational drawing, painting, photography, photomontage,
collage, print, type and three-dimensional ways of work.
This project is in 2 parts. Part 1 gives you the opportunity to
explore and extend your experience of drawing, techniques and processes. You
will concentrate on working from observation working expressively and in more
controlled ways. Initial drawings will lead onto more individual pieces.
There will be an emphasis on using observational skills and responding to the
insects with a variety of techniques.
Part 2 then asks you to apply this information within the following
ways: a 3D Design context or a Fashion Design context.
In addition to this brief please refer to https://btecartanddesignblog.blogspot.com/
for additional guidance throughout the project.

Task 1
|
Initial Research and Mind Mapping:
·
Consider the idea of an insect. Write down
words associated with these creatures - their character/behaviour as well as
their physical appearance. Consider what they mean to you, perhaps
words such as predator, sting, poison, danger, energy, warrior, industrious,
worker, queen, drone, community, hive, nest.
Produce an extensive brainstorm.
·
Start to collect information and visuals on these
creatures, use Pinterest. https://www.pinterest.co.uk/ Analyse
differing parts of the insects - the abdomen, the proportional parts, the
mandibles and shape of the head area, the segmented legs. In every way
begin to research information about these creatures that gives you a much
deeper understanding of their features in as wide a way as possible.
Start to present this research in a sketchbook that pays homage to these creatures
and widens our understanding of them.
Consider habitat, lifespan, diet, swarming etc.
|
Timescale for completion of this
task:
|
Alongside
practical work during first week of project, finished by Friday 19th
October.
|
Checklist of evidence required:
|
·
2
pages of thorough and imaginative mind-mapping.
·
At
least 4 pages of visuals and information regarding insects, this should be
collaged into your sketchbooks and presented in a mood-board style.
|
Assessment:
|
Class crits, peer and teacher verbal
feedback. Summative Unit marking.

Task 2:
|
Visual
Recording of the Insect through Photography, Drawing, Printmaking, Digital
Media:
·
Using
cameras we will obtain a set of photographs recording insects set in resin
(these will be provided).
·
Through a series of exercises we will respond to the Insects and create
powerful observational pieces at various scales that explore shape, colour and
mark-making. Try to demonstrate
fluency within the use of your materials.
·
We will develop our drawn studies through monoprinting, monotype
reduction prints, wire and gold card relief printing.
·
Alongside this you will develop your photos, drawings and prints
further through use of PhotoShop, scanning, overlaying and combining imagery.
·
This work should be supported by research into 2 relevant practitioners
who explore different approaches to drawing. Choose one illustrator from:
Ralph Steadman, Dave McKean, Tim Burton. And one Fine Artist from: Egon
Schiele, Alison Lambert, William Kentridge.
|
Timescale for completion of this
task:
|
Complete
photography and drawing exercises before half term (Weds 24th
October), we should also get some printmaking and digital work underway.

printmaking, digital work and supporting research by Wednesday 7th
November.
|
Checklist of evidence required
|
·
Range of photos, contact
sheet plus best shots printed larger.
·
Sustained and expressive
drawings on a range of scales.
·
Variety of interpretations of
the insects created through printmaking.
