Vocational Scenario or context

This is an induction project, the intention is to build a range of skills and familiarity with a variety of techniques that will stand you in good stead for the challenges of the next two years. Whilst broadening your skill set we will also aspire to produce some sophisticated visual work that will provide the start of your progression portfolio.
Using a well selected hand-tool as your starting point (this should be an object which has a number of different working parts, textures, different materials in it’s construction, interesting negative shapes and strong structural elements …e.g. corkscrew, can opener) you are required to produce a body of work, which represents your object in a number of different ways. We will build on drawing and printmaking skills and explore processes such as Collage, Digital Photography and PhotoShop.
Once we have a good bank of imagery we will seek to develop this into abstract compositions, overlaying motifs and shapes found in our tools. These abstract designs will allow us to explore new and recently acquired techniques, initially in 2 dimensions, before using these compositions as the inspiration for 3 Dimensional work, concluding the project by creating a freestanding piece of sculpture.
In addition to this brief please refer to https://btecartanddesignblog.blogspot.com/ for additional guidance throughout the project.

Task 1

Photography:
·         A selection of at least 20 dramatic photos of your tool, print contact sheets of your shoot and include the 4 -6 of the best shots printed out at A4 or A5 scale.
Timescale for completion of this task:

Complete by Wednesday 4th September.

Assessment:

Weekly class crit, peer and teacher verbal feedback.

Task 2:

Observational Drawing:
  • At least one full page sustained careful pencil tonal drawing from your tool photos (this should represent at least 3 hours work). Choose a complex composition that will challenge you.
  • A set of rapid expressive drawings - we will complete these as a class exercise.
  • One larger scale (A1) expressive drawing, charcoal (mid-tone base).
Timescale for completion of this task:

All observational drawing should be complete by Monday 10th September. Any unfinished activities from class must be finished for PREP.

Weekly class crit, peer and teacher verbal feedback.

Extension:

·         Produce an additional sustained drawing in another media (e.g. fineliner/biro).

Task 3:

Supporting Research:
·         Alongside our practical studies we need to contextualise our work with some relevant analytical research. Look at the work of Florian Nicolle and Jim Dine’s Tool drawings over 4 sketchbook pages, additional guidance will be added to the blog.

Timescale for completion of this task:

PREP TASK Needs to be completed by Monday 10th September.

Assessment:

Weekly class crit, peer and teacher verbal feedback.

Extension:

In addition research an Artist to support the printmaking work – e.g. Lucian Freud’s etchings.

Task  4:

Printmaking:
·         Produce a range of monoprints – both sustained and rapid expressive pieces.
·         Cut and print a gold card relief plate, exploring the potential of the different forms of markmaking achievable in this media.

Timescale for completion of this task:

Printmaking tasks need to be completed by Thursday 13th September. Mounting work effectively in Sketchbooks is a PREP TASK

Assessment:

Weekly class crit, peer and teacher verbal feedback.

Extension:

Task 5:

Collage and Digital:
·         On an A3 mixed media base we will produce a bold drawn image of our tool, working in with paint and biro.
·         Using a bold image (a print?) photocopied onto acetate produce a collage by adding torn magazine fragments.
·         We will then scan this image and others from the project to date and layer, manipulate and add elements digitally through PhotoShop to produce several images for printing and inclusion in sketchbooks.

Timescale for completion of this task:

By the end of lessons on Wednesday 19th September. Any unfinished collage or digital work must be completed as PREP.

Assessment:

Sketchbooks to be submitted for Project Mid-Point Assessment. Wednesday 19th August.

Extension:

Experiment further with mixed media and/or digital work to produce additional images, consider integrating adding more techniques such as the sewing machine.
