BTEC Extended Diploma Art &
Design
Summer Prep Work
In order to
make a flying start to the new academic year we need you to gather some source
imagery over the Summer break.
You will get
a full project briefing in September, but in the interim please ensure that you
take this opportunity to impress.
Plentiful strong source imagery
will make all the difference in the forthcoming project so give this task
careful consideration.
Modern Architecture Photography
Make the
effort to visit some interesting examples of Modern Architecture. Big cities
are typically the best locations for this, within the UK London would be the
best option. The area directly around Canary
Wharf Tube Station (and the station itself), and the buildings within the
Financial District (nearest tube BANK)
feature multiple opportunities for interesting shots in compact areas.
It would be
easy to combine these two areas in a day trip. You will see iconic buildings
such as:
Canary Wharf
Station (Foster and Partners)
1 Canada
Square/Canary Wharf Tower (Cesar Pelli)
30 St.
Mary’s Axe/The Gherkin (Foster and Partners)
The Willis
Building (Foster and Partners)
The Lloyds
Building (Richard Rogers)
Leadenhall
Tower/The Cheesegrater (Richard Rogers)
20 Fenchurch
St./The Walkie-Talkie (Rafael Vinoly)
If you are
out of the UK over the Summer you will need to find an alternative location for
your photography – remember to focus specifically on Modern Architecture.
The Photos
Take plenty
of shots, with digital photography you’ll have the opportunity to select and
refine later, but start from a broad base, taking 100+ shots should guarantee a
few real gems.
You don’t
want shots of whole buildings from a distance. Get up close, choose unusual
angles, fill the frame, look for reflections, interesting intersections of
angles, surfaces, perspectives etc. Some examples are included to give you the
idea.
If possible
have a look at the weather forecast and select a day where good light is
likely. Good Luck and I look forward to working with you all in the new term.
